Friendly Water for the World

Changing the World One Household, One Community at a Time

Biosand Water Filters offer an elegantly

simple technology that can remove 95

- 99% of bacteria and viruses, as well

as metals, pro-viding pure water for the

family. More than 3.6 million people now

have access to filtered water through

installations in homes, schools,

hostels, and clinics in 66 countries.

They work.  After 70% of the residents in the Bomet Region of Kenya were able to access Biosand Water Filters, dysentery cases in the local hospital dropped 85%.

Filters are inexpensive, durable, and made of locally available materials (sand, gravel, and cement). A filter that provides clean water for a family costs approximately $50 and will work for up to 30 years with almost no maintenance needed.

Fabricating and installing Biosand Water Filters is a proven local micro-business that can and does create local jobs and generates needed income.

IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE THIS WAY

Friendly Water for the World seeks to increase environmental and community sustainability by helping communities help themselves. Our focus is on building local capacity through training and helping to start local micro-business or community-led distribution strategies. We seek out communities and partners wanting to learn about:

* Constructing and maintaining Biosand Water Filters.

* How to run a micro-business.

* Raising awareness and

understanding of basic

sanitation and hygiene.

Our long-term vision is to

catalyze the formation of

locally led training centers

and micro-business incubators

in Africa, India, and elsewhere

to help spread this technology.

Welcome

CHANGING THE WORLD ONE HOUSEHOLD,

ONE COMMUNITY AT A TIME

UNFRIENDLY WATER: A WORLDWIDE PLAGUE

Right now 900 million people around the world drink, cook, and wash in untreated water full of harmful viruses, bacteria, worms, and parasites.

* 3.5 million people die of water-related diseases every year.

* A child dies of a waterborne disease every 20 seconds.

* In the past decade, more people have died of water-related causes than from all wars combined.
